It grows only on the Seychelles islands of Curieuse and Praslin. Its growing place was only discovered in 1768 by a French expedition. Before that, its origin was a mystery, and one theory was that the nuts came from an unknown palm growing at sea, hence the name coco de mer or sea coconut.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe fruit, with its somewhat erotic shape, was given a scientific name referring to the posterior of a woman: Lodoicea callipyge, where callipyge is ancient Greek for beautiful buttocks. The coco de mer is a rare protected species and has been listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2007.
