Baroque cabinet of curiosities

A beautifully subtle Baroque cabinet of curiosities (art cabinet) from Southern Europe, early 19th century. Standing on bun feet. In exceptionally good condition, as we do not often come across them. Inlaid with various fantastic woods, including ebony (black in colour). Tortoiseshell and bone have also been used.

A cabinet of curiosities (or Kunstkammer) was used from the 16th century to collect and display special objects. It served as a kind of private museum for rich collectors, princes or scholars. Such a cabinet held works of art, scientific instruments, exotic objects, minerals, fossils and curiosities. The purpose was both aesthetic and educational: to impress visitors, but also to organise and understand the world and nature symbolically.

Everything works as it should. No missing pieces of inlay. All the small drawer locks work except one.
