Giant fossilised ammonite

Ammonites are an extinct class of cephalopods. They lived in large numbers worldwide, and most died out about 65 million years ago, together with the dinosaurs.

This specimen is of exceptionally large size and belongs to the species Arietites bucklandi, which is estimated to have lived 170 to 200 million years ago. Today many ammonite fossils are found on the north French coast. According to the previous owner, a keen collector, this specimen was found in England. It weighs around 80 kg.
