Gigantic bust of the French king Louis XIV

Gigantic bust / statue of the French king Louis XIV, made of solid concrete in the late 20th century. The statue weighs approximately 150 to 200 kg.

Louis XIV (1638 to 1715), nicknamed "the Sun King", was king of France from 1643 to 1715. At 72 years he is the longest reigning monarch in European history. Key features of his rule: absolutism, the expansion of the palace of Versailles into an enormous centre of power to which he moved the court (keeping the nobility close and under control), and several major wars to expand French power and territory.

He ascended the throne at the age of 4 (with a regency), and only took over the government himself after the death of Cardinal Mazarin in 1661.
