Pair of carved satyrs
Two hand carved wooden figures or wall ornaments of a satyr. 17th or 18th century. Country of origin unknown.
In Greek mythology a satyr is a creature often depicted as half man, half animal, usually with the upper body of a man and the lower body and legs of a goat. Satyrs are known for their love of music, dancing and revelry, and are often shown playing flutes or pipes. They were followers of Dionysus, the god of wine, pleasure and fertility, and were associated with the untamed, primal aspects of nature.
