Pair of marble satyr masks

A set of two special Italian masks of a satyr, carved entirely from marble. Originally from Italy, 19th century.

A satyr is a mythical creature from Greek mythology, known as a follower of the wine god Dionysus. Satyrs are half man, half goat, with pointed ears, goat legs, a tail and sometimes horns. They symbolise nature, lust, music and celebration, and are often depicted as playful, unrestrained figures who dance, play the flute and hunt for pleasure. In Roman mythology they resemble fauns.

They can be hung on a wall, or we can have a stand made. In good condition; on both the left horn has broken off.
